A flashback takes us back thirteen years and we meet an entirely different Mary. Here she is sweet, fun and ambitious as she talks about getting a degree and playfully teases her fresh husband. The Mary of the flashbacks is worlds away from the woman of present day and it is a rare treat for McGowan fans to get to see one project and one character demonstrate two such different sides and ages of her. While the scenes between Mary and Matthew are be hard to watch at times because of the extreme abuse, they are contrasted with tender moments between Mary and her children. Here Rose gets to showcase a motherly and vulnerable side. One key scene shows McGowan act out Mary's utter heartbreak after her daughters' emotional visit at her in jail.
